A friend posted a days history of a fella named Charles Hamilton making the first heavier than air flight in Ct. 108 years ago. (I’d put my money of Gustav Whitehead in 1901-but thats another story.) So I did a little reading. Wow! When you are known for your crashes-and how much you drank before you flew....

Though I am an armchair aviation historian , I have never heard of Whitehead. I’ve not read that much about him yet , but my biggest question surrounding his claims of flying before the Wright Brothers is, where are the airplanes? If he had made such a historic flight, why did he simply vanish from aviation history?

In other news, Whitehead’s wife was named Tuba. That’s funny.

Because at the time, to the victors went the history. The Wright brother were great at self pro motion. And as it turns out, dicks. http://time.com/4143574/wright-brothers-patent-trolling/

And they managed to lock up their place in history with more threats + lawsuits. They became the first “official airplane of the Smithsonian.” As long as no one ever questioned them. https://airandspace.si.edu/exhibitions/wright-brothers/online/icon/feud.cfm

And you realize they actually launched using a catapault?

That catapult is the biggest knock against them in favor of Santos-Dumont. But catapult aside, it was the WB’s development of a useful control system  that really put them at the top of the list. If you had to put an asterisk by their names, it would be to call theirs the first *practical* powered aircraft.
